Background of the study
Language contact, the interaction between speakers of different languages, plays a critical role in shaping morphological patterns. In Igbo communities, constant contact with English and other regional languages has led to noticeable shifts in word formation processes. This study assesses how language contact influences morphological patterns in Igbo, focusing on changes in affixation, compounding, and derivational processes (Nwankwo, 2023). As Igbo speakers interact with speakers of other languages through education, media, and migration, their morphological practices adapt, leading to innovative hybrid forms. Fieldwork conducted in various Igbo communities indicates that such contact not only enriches the lexicon but also challenges traditional morphological boundaries, necessitating a reevaluation of language norms (Okafor, 2024). The research employs a combination of corpus analysis and sociolinguistic interviews to document these changes, offering insights into the dynamics of language evolution. The findings will contribute to a deeper understanding of the interplay between language contact and morphological innovation in Igbo, with implications for language planning and preservation (Eze, 2025).

Statement of the problem
Despite the acknowledged role of language contact in influencing morphological patterns, there is limited systematic research on its impact on Igbo morphology. Preliminary evidence suggests that external linguistic influences are reshaping traditional Igbo word-formation processes; however, detailed analyses are scarce (Nwankwo, 2023). This lack of data hinders effective language planning and the development of teaching materials that accurately reflect contemporary usage. Understanding the extent and nature of these changes is essential for preserving Igbo linguistic heritage and ensuring that morphological innovations do not compromise language identity (Okafor, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

To document morphological changes in Igbo due to language contact.

To analyze shifts in affixation and compounding patterns.

To assess the implications for language preservation.

Research questions:

How does language contact affect Igbo morphological patterns?

What specific changes in word formation are observed?

How can these changes inform language planning?

Research Hypotheses:

Language contact significantly alters Igbo morphology.

Hybrid forms emerge from interlingual influences.

Effective language planning can balance innovation with tradition.

Significance of the study:
This study provides essential insights into how language contact shapes Igbo morphology, offering guidance for educators and policymakers. Its findings will help preserve linguistic integrity while accommodating modern influences (Nwankwo, 2023; Eze, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to examining morphological patterns in Igbo influenced by language contact and does not address phonological or syntactic aspects.

Definitions of terms:

Language Contact: The interaction between speakers of different languages.

Morphological Patterns: The regularities in word formation.

Igbo: An indigenous language spoken in southeastern Nigeria.
